100_Situations - Fake ID (043 - Dive)
Title: Fake ID
Fandom: The OC
Characters: Ryan Atwood
Prompt: 043 - Dive
Word Count: 476
Rating: R (For Language and Sexual Content, but not graphic)
Summary: The bar is a dive, but the tips are good.
Author's Notes: 5th in the Runaway series, comes after: 'Finality', 'Breakaway', 'A Gnawing Pain', and 'Desperate Times'.
Fake ID
Ryan got the job in a bar in New Jersey simply because no one else had applied and because, with the stubble on his face, he looked 21. He'd come up with a story about being mugged and his ID being gone, but promised that once he had the money saved up, he'd get a new ID. And he did, he just forgot to tell his boss that it was fake, he wasn't 22 and he couldn't be an organ donor because he'd had unprotected sex with random men just to scrape by.
The bar itself was a dive, filled with the usual drunks and the occasional junkie, but the tips were damn good and he managed to get out of the shitty homeless shelter and into a slightly less shitty apartment within a couple weeks. He had customers, both male and female, flirting with him and leaving him big tips, and he didn't really discourage anyone unless they mentioned him coming home with them, then he turned cold and walked away. The regulars got the message and went back to harmless flirting.
He made a few friends, people he could laugh with and have a little fun with, people who would back him up if anyone gave him a hard time. But when it came down to it, Ryan always went home alone to his shitty apartment, and spent most of his time worrying that his next HIV test at the free clinic would be positive.
Then he met Colleen, and she seemed to like him, didn't care when he mentioned the possible HIV exposure, and they had sex, using protection and being careful, almost every night. They always went to Colleen's place, Ryan refused to let her in his front door, and they both enjoyed the relationship. The drugs Colleen offered him just made it better, because they made him numb and made the memories disappear into a haze, if only for a short while.
Then Colleen turned up pregnant and admitted to fucking around with other guys, and sharing needles, and Ryan told her to go to hell and walked away. After that, he was back to spending his free time with his friends from the bar, and when he caught a cold he panicked and immediately went to the free clinic. It was just your normal flu, his HIV results were once again negative, but he couldn't help being scared and decided the hell with this.
He went back to the dive of a bar one last time, to tell his boss he was quitting for his own sanity, and ended up with a black eye and a busted up wrist for not giving 2 weeks notice.
So he added two more things to his 'never again' list: dive bars and girls who don't mind screwing a guy who could have HIV.
THE END
