24 Gifts Of 2010 - Day Sixteen - Untitled Ryan/Claudia Snippet
So, I've mentioned the idea of liking the Eureka!Ryan/Claudia (Warehouse 13) pairing, and while I have an idea for working it into something later, here's a little snippet of their first meeting...
For the sake of this universe, ignore the most recent season of Eureka completely, including the Eureka/Warehouse 13 crossover ep... in my mind, Zane Donovan of Eureka and Claudia Donovan of Warehouse 13 are cousins, rather than strangers who share the same last name... lol...
"This place is awesome."
Zane looked up from the console he was working at, and grinned at his cousin, Claudia. "I had a feeling you'd think that," he told her as he pulled her into a hug. "How's Joshua?"
"Loving his job at CERN," Claudia replied. "Is that a race track?" she asked, pushing past him towards the observation window.
"It's for testing speed and maneuverability," Allison explained. "And whoever is down there is doing a great job considering they're going... 235?" she added.
Zane tapped the headset he was wearing. "Hey, Allison says your doing great."
"Did you tell her it's me driving?" came Ryan's voice, and Zane winced when he saw the look on Allison's face.
"I have you on speaker, Ryan, so you just told her."
"Yeah, well, you're the responsible adult, I'm the kid, so your to blame," Ryan replied, already starting to slow the motorcycle he was driving. "Allison, we're working on an upgrade for Jack and Lupo, get their trucks going to 250, and emergencies can be handled much faster."
"Technically, you're an adult, too, Ryan," Allison said, her voice scolding. "Jack is not going to be any happier than I am."
"It's a surprise," Zane said. "Come on, at least don't tell him until we unveil it!"
"You wouldn't want to ruin a surprise, would you?" Claudia asked.
"Ryan, bring it in now and I'll consider it," Allison said.
"I need another half lap to get down to a good stopping speed," Ryan replied.
"We're still working on a brake that works at over 225 without risking major crashes," Zane explained.
"You're not making me feel better about this," Allison said.
"Right, stopping now."
"For a genius, that was kinda stupid," Claudia said.
As the motorcycle came to a stop by the doors, then headed out onto the track to meet Ryan.
"Was the ride as smooth as it looked?" Zane asked.
"Smoother," Ryan replied as he took off his helmet and turned off the already almost silent engine. "Allison, it's not that dangerous, really," he started when he saw the relief on her face. "You know the kind of fail-safes in here, and I'm wearing protective gear just in case."
"Do you really think that's going to reassure Jack anymore than it reassures me?" Allison asked.
"Allison is Ryan's mom, his dad's the sheriff," Zane told Claudia. "Makes it really hard to get away with anything."
"You know, I can hear you, Zane," Allison said.
Ryan sighed. "Come on, it's useful," he said, getting the conversation back on track. "If they had these upgrades already, it wouldn't have been cutting it so close two weeks ago when Doctor Mitchell's lab was overloading. Jo could have gotten him in to Global in half the time."
"That would be useful," Allison agreed. "But this is dangerous!"
"Not really," Zane said. "Come on, do you really think I'd be letting him be the test driver if I thought it wasn't safe? First of all, the Sheriff would kill me, then Zoe, then you, then Jo... there wouldn't be enough left of me to bury. Second of all, if it was dangerous, I'd wanna do it!"
Ryan unzipped his jacket and tossed it over the railing. "He would, he lost all interest in being the driver when he realized it was completely safe."
"It's no fun if it's not dangerous," Claudia said.
"That is where you're wrong," Ryan said. "It may not be dangerous, but it's still exhilarating to go faster than any other normal vehicle out there, and to know that it's your own work that made it possible."
Zane grinned. "Ryan, this is my cousin, Claudia Donovan. She came to make sure Jo's good enough for me."
Ryan snorted. "Popular belief is, considering the fact that she puts up with him, Jo's a saint."
"Must be, the Donovan men are nightmares, that's why I am so glad my brother is in Europe. Small doses of them works best," Claudia said with a grin.
"I'm a glutton for punishment, I like working with him," Ryan replied.
"Anyway," Zane interrupted. "Claudia, this is Ryan Atwood, this kid makes me look genuinely stupid."
"I'm impressed, smart and likes fast cars," Claudia said. "Not hard on the eyes either," she added.
"That... don't flirt with him!" Zane protested.
"Why not?" Claudia asked.
"Because... because your last boyfriend went into witness protection and Eureka likes having Ryan around!"
"He was already in witness protection when I met him!" Claudia protested.
"Uh-huh, whatever you say, Claudia," Zane said.
"I think he's more worried about how much trouble we'd manage to get into, and how much of it we'd exclude him from," Ryan said. "Grand theft auto, arson, and breaking probation charges. All within a 2 month period."
"Hacking a government facility, kidnapping a government agent, and stealing objects from said government facility to sell to a bad guy," Claudia said. "The stealing one was a frame up, though."
"Eh, the arson was the guys who were kicking my ass knocking over candles," Ryan replied. "Hey, my sister Zoe has identity theft and credit card fraud. It's all... well, not good, but... people do stuff, doesn't mean they aren't good people."
"Did you two seriously just turn exchanging criminal histories into flirting?" Allison asked.
"Sharing common interests," Claudia said, grinning again. "It's better than the awkward 'It sure is nice out today' conversations. And better than bad pick up lines."
