The Follow Through (Chapter Two) - Sequel to 'The Unexpected'

The second chapter. As I said before, this is an early fic of mine, though I have been working on it again lately. I don't want to rewrite the whole thing to make everything make perfect sense because... I kinda like the over the top silliness of some of it. And I'm not ashamed that I used to leave plotholes! lol

I'm correcting small things as I go, like typoes and minor things that I know recognize as ridiculous... but the major stuff is all the same as what I wrote years ago.

Written during Season Two/Early Season 3...

Chapter Two

A week later, Summer walked into the coffe shop with some of her classmates gossiping about the girls who weren't with them. But as they passed a TV that was showing the news, Summer froze and backed up to stare at the screen, her face going as white as a ghost.

"What's wrong?" Tiffany, one of her classmates, asked.

"Where's the remote?" Summer demanded, looking around. "I need to turn the volume up..."

"No one listens to the news, Summer," Kelly, another classmate, said. "Who cares about it?"

"I know that guy!" Summer insisted. Finally she found the remote and turned the volume up high, just in time to hear the announcer.

"Ryan Cohen, the younger grandson of Business Mogul Caleb Nichols, disappeared from the UCLA campus last week after getting into an arguement with his brother about a girl. Cohen walked out of his dorm, telling a friend that he was going home, but he never arrived at his family's house in Newport Beach, California," the woman said while a picture of Ryan was shown on screen. "According to police reports, the 23 year-old Architecture student left his credit cards, checkbook, and cell phone behind, and a classmate claims Cohen seemed extremely distressed as he left campus. If you know anything about the wherebouts of Ryan Alexander Cohen, please contact the Newport Beach Police Department."

Summer muted the TV again, her face even paler than before. "Oh my God," she whispered.

"You know that missing guy?" Kelly asked.

"I used to date him," Summer said. "In high school."

"Good thing you ditched him then, he sounds like a loon to me..."

"Shut it," Summer ordered, tossing the remote back on the counter and hurrying out. If Ryan was in trouble, there was no way Summer was going to stay in New York. Despite her words the last time the eachother, her insistance that she didn't love him and never did, she had to know he was okay.

"I still can't believe you did that, Seth," Hailey told her nephew as she took a break from pacing the Cohen living room. "I mean, God! This is Ryan we're talking about, he'd do anything for you! How could you even consider..."

"I screwed up, I get it!" Seth protested. "I messed up and now we have no idea where Ry is and it's all my fault he could be laying in a gutter somewhere."

"Yeah, that pretty much sums it up," Hailey said. "I just want to know what the hell you were thinking."

"I wasn't thinking!"

"Obviously," Marissa said as she and her dad, Jimmy, walked into the room.

"Any news?" Jimmy asked Hailey.

"None," Hailey replied. "It's like he just disappeared off the face of the earth."

At that very moment, in Chino, Ryan was downing a beer while he sat on Theresa's backporch. She had let him stay when he explained the situation, had even offered to go have a 'talk' with Seth. He had quickly assured her that wasn't neccesary, though he appreciated the offer, and she had instead told him he could stay as long as he needed, even forever if he wanted. He fully intended to never go back to Newport and the Cohens, he didn't want to be a problem for them because, even if they didn't love him, he still loved them. Thankfully, Theresa was happy to let him stay with her and her daughter, Gabrielle.

Ryan wasn't Gaby's father, though he once thought he could be. After his break up with Summer, he had gone back to his old routine. When things got hard he ran to Theresa. Her mother had happened to be out of town and they'd spent the night together. Later, when Theresa had turned up pregnant Ryan had offered to return to Chino to help her, but she had told him that Eddie, her estranged husband, could be the father and convinced him to wait. After Gaby's birth the paternity test had been done, and Eddie had proved to be the father.

But by that time Ryan had already fallen in love with the little girl and when Eddie had walked away from Theresa and Gaby, Theresa had immediately asked Ryan to be the little girl's godfather, and he had made a habit of sending her Birthday and Christmas gifts, even after he and Theresa's last encounter had ended so badly.

He had been upset and gotten drunk before going to see Theresa, expecting to sleep with her and leave in the morning like always. Instead she had hit him and told him never to come back to her house, especially not drunk. That day had been the last time he'd gotten drunk. Until his first night at Theresa's.

She had actually drug him out to a bar and gotten him smashed while a friend watched Gaby. They had ended up sharing Theresa's bed, but there was nothing sexual about it. Theresa held him while he mumbled irrationally about how much it hurt to lose another family. She did what she had always done, made him feel safe. And that was all he needed and wanted from her.

"What the hell sent Chino running off?" Summer demanded as she burst into the Cohen house the next day, hands on hips.

"Summer?" Seth asked, shocked. "What are you..."

"The reporter I saw talking about it said you and him were fighting about a girl, so what the hell happened, Cohen?" Summer interrupted.

"Summer?" Kirsten asked as she came into the living room and saw the girl she once considered a daughter.

"I heard about Chino and I want to know what the hell Cohen did to upset him so much he took off," Summer said, her lower lip trembling slightly. "I mean, Chino's like so damn thick skinned..."

"I said he wasn't my brother and mom and dad just let him stay because they pitied him," Seth mumbled.

"And he accused Ryan of sleeping with me," Marissa added. "Which obviously never happened."

"You did what, Cohen?" Summer said, on the verge of a rage blackout.

"I screwed up, I know it," Seth said. "Beating the crap out of me won't get Ryan back here."

"I was thinking more along the lines of fork in your..." Summer began angrily then censored herself since she was in Kirsten's presence. "God you're an idiot," she added before turning and storming out.

Kirsten ran after her, catching the girl as she started to climb into her rental car. "Summer?"

"I have an idea where he might be," Summer said. "Maybe I can get him to come home and talk to you about how he's being an idiot, doubting that you guys love him."

"Where?" Kirsten asked. "Sandy and I can..."

"You don't think he'll listen to me?" Summer asked.

"I don't understand why you care," Kirsten replied. "You broke his heart, Summer."

"I was protecting him," Summer replied.

"From what?"

"From being hurt a lot worse if he ever knew." Summer said sadly.

"Knew what?" Kirsten asked, more confused than ever.

"Knew that because of my stupidity, his child died," Summer said before getting in her car and driving off, leaving a shocked Kirsten behind.

~~~~~
"Sandy," Kirsten said, pulling her husband aside as soon as he walked into the house. "We need to talk."
"News?" Sandy asked, hoping to hear that Ryan had been found.
"Ryan's still missing, but... Summer's in town and told me something," Kirsten said.
"What?" Sandy asked, frowning. He had loved Summer like a daughter years ago, but now he disliked the girl for how she'd hurt Ryan.
"Sandy, before they broke up... apparently... Summer was pregnant. She broke up with him because she lost the baby and thought it was her fault," Kirsten said. "I don't think Ryan ever knew about the baby."
Sandy let out a low whistle. "Damn. That explains it a little better. Where is she?"
Kirsten sighed. "She said she had an idea of where to find Ryan, but wouldn't tell me where."
Theresa yawned as she stumbled through the house towards the front door, not wantign the knocking to wake up Ryan or Gaby. She opened the door and stared at the girl in designer clothes on the outside of the screen, recognizing her immediately. "What do you want?" Theresa demanded, narrowing her eyes.
"Theresa, right?" Summer said. "Hi, I'm..."
"Summer Roberts, I know," Theresa said. "Ry told me all about how you dumped him the night you guys graduated high school."
"Right, yeah," Summer said, uncomfortable. "Is he here? Because the Cohens are freaking out, and..."
"Well it's their prick of a son's fault," Theresa countered.
"No arguement here, Seth's an idiot," Summer said. "But Kirsten and Sandy love Ryan and they are terrified that he's laying in a gutter somewhere dead."
"He's passed out drunk," Theresa said.
"What? Chino doesn't drink."
"Yeah, he does, Princess," Theresa said. "That's what he's been doing the past week, getting drunk and passing out."
"Mommy?" came a small voice and Gaby appeared. "Uncle Ryan's getting sick in the bathroom."
Theresa groaned. "Damn it," she muttered. "When's he gonna learn to lay still until the headache goes away?"
"You could always punish him by letting me see him," Summer said brightly.
Theresa considered for a minute, then nodded. "Fine. Down the hall, 2nd door on the left."
"Thanks," Summer said as she walked in.
"Who are you?" Gaby asked.
"I'm Summer, who are you?"
"Gabrielle Diaz. Are you a friend of my Uncle Ryan's?"
"Sort of," Summer said, smiling weakly before continuing to the bathroom, where she could hear Ryan wretching. She peeked in and flinched when she saw how worn out he looked. "Hey," she whispered.
Ryan froze, then slowly lifted his head to look at her. "Summer?"
"Yeah, Chino, it's me."
