Oh, yeah, and It's been WAY more than 3 months since I last paster (::cough::8 months::cough::) so officially I doubt I still have the claim, but, I still plan on trying to finish the claim... Does anyone even remember this series? If not click HERE for the back chapters.

Sophie watched as Ryan ate his breakfast that first morning he was in her house, more specifically how he ate it quickly as though afraid it would be taken away from him, and she felt her heart break. He was way too skinny, especially compared to the last time she had seen him, and the dark circles under his eyes betrayed how much his health had suffered since he left Newport. He did the same thing at lunch, though he ate a bit slower and a bit less, a look on his face that worried her slightly.

At dinner, he didn't eat much of anything. He took two bites of the food she set in front of him before his face went pale and he jumped up to run for the bathroom and throw up until he was dry heaving. She'd been through this with sick kids before, and perched on the edge of the tub to rub his back and give him gentle reassurances that it would pass and he'd feel better.

The next morning the smell of breakfast sent Ryan stumbling for the bathroom, and he barely managed to keep down the toast she gave him at lunchtime. Against her better judgement, she let it go on for 2 full days before she called in a favor with an old friend and got Ryan an emergency appointment with a doctor. Considering how little arguement he put up whens he told him, Sophie knew it had to be serious.

When they got to the doctor's office, Sophie insisted on staying with Ryan, and again he didn't argue, though he did blush slightly when he was asked to take off his shirt so the doctor could check his lungs, and Sophie fought a flinch when she saw the scars and bruises that covered his back and side.

"How did this happen?" the doctor asked, frowning as he probed the wounds.

"Fight," Ryan replied. "A couple days before I went to the Nana's."

"You didn't say anything about a fight," Sophie scolded lightly as she leaned forward to take his hand.

"Didn't wanna worry you," Ryan replied softly.

"You definitely bruised your ribs," the doctor said. "But it could be worse, they don't seem broken. Now, on the phone, your grandmother said you've been having trouble holding food down?"

"He's been throwing up after one whiff of anything cooking," Sophie said. "He was find the first morning and afternoon, ate plenty. But dinner he threw up, and he hasn't held anything but a little bit of toast down since then."

"What's your diet been like lately, Ryan? Before moving in with Sophie?" the doctor asked.

"Whatever I could afford," Ryan said.

"Which was?"

"Whatever I could afford," Ryan repeated, his tone a little more angry. "I was homeless. The day I went to the Nana's, I'd been lucky to get enough change to buy a cup of coffee to try and warm myself up after a couple weeks sleeping in alleys and eating whatever cheap food I could find money for. So my diet sucked."

"When was the last time, before going to your grandmothers, that you were able to be eating regularly?"

Ryan thought for a minute, and ran a hand through his hair. "I guess a couple months ago, in North Carolina. I was working at a diner and sometimes at the club the same woman owned, and... she gave me free meals because I kinda reminded her of her son. But I left almost 5 months ago," he said, shrugging.

"It might just be because your body isn't used to good food, it's rebelling against it," the doctor said. "We'll run some tests, see if anything comes up, but I'm guessing you just need to let yourself adjust slowly. Eat bland food for a while and gradually add in richer foods. Small portions that gradually get larger until you're eating a nice big hearty meal."

"And that'll help?" Sophie asked.

"Hopefully," the doctor said.

"I... I'm about due for another STDs panel," Ryan said quietly. "Could you go ahead and do that, too?"

"Sure," the doctor said, nodding. "Were you exposed?"

"Yeah, I was," Ryan said, looking at the floor.

"We'll add those to the list," the doctor said.

When they got back to the house, Sophie insisted Ryan go straight up to bed and lay down, she'd bring him some tea and some saltines. By the time she got to the bedroom, Ryan was asleep, the covers pulled up to his waist. She quickly pulled the covers the rest of the way up, adding the extra comforter again so he would stay warm, left the saltines and a glass of water on the nightstand, then quietly slipped out of the room to go back downstairs.

She'd yet to call Sandy and tell him that she'd seen Ryan, putting it off out of concern for the boy, but as she sat down on the couch she picked up the phone and dialed, waiting for her eldest son to answer.

"Hey, ma," Sandy said in a weary voice.

"How's everything?" Sophie asked.

"Alright," Sandy replied. "We just... we haven't had anymore leads on Ryan lately."

"I saw him," Sophie said.

"What?" Sandy said.

"I saw him. He's... he's not in the best of shape, but he's doing okay. He's trying to take care of himself."

"Where? We'll fly out and..."

"Sandford, he's not ready to see you," Sophie interrupted. "He told me that he can't handle seeing you right now, it would be too much."

"We're his family!" Sandy protested.

"And you all have expectations of him," Sophie said. "He needs to be on his own for a while, he needs to figure things out alone."

"It's been 18 months, ma," Sandy said. "That's long enough. Especially when all the reports we've been getting say he's looking worse and worse!"

"And if you force your way into his life, it could drive him further away than ever," Sophie said. "He could decide never to go home or even call you."

"He hasn't called us," Sandy said.

"He promised that he'd keep in touch with me," Sophie said. "I'll try to get him to call you, but you've gotta promise me that you won't push him. Don't ask him to come home, don't ask anything of him. Just tell him you love him and you'll be there when he's ready for you."

"I promise, ma, anything to hear his voice," Sandy said in a tone that broke his mother's heart.

"I'll ask him," Sophie said. "Just... don't give up on him, Sandford, the boy's just a little lost right now, but he's gonna find his way back to his family."

The End
