We not only can, but we did.
My mom and I have been watching the coverage all night, and we are both in tears because god damn it we did it!
We both voted for Obama. We've both been supporters of his since he spoke at the 2004 DNC, and we were both hoping he'd run in this one. The moment he became the Democratic canidate, there was no doubt in our minds who we'd be voting for.
My mom worked for the Civil Rights Movement. She risked her life, literally, on a regular basis planning marches in the deep south. And this means the world to her that she got to see this happen in her lifetime. I've grown up hearing her stories, and it feels amazing to know that, in some small, or not so small, way she helped this be possible by fighting for it.
I was thinking earlier "I have faith in this country that they'll do the right thing." Except in truth? I didn't have faith they would. I love my country, but I had pretty much no faith in the American people to make the right choice.
Well, I have never been so happy to be proved wrong in my life.
Hallelujah, we did damn good.
