Another prompt response for Jessica (Got her name wrong on the last one and only realized when she commented on the fic... sorry Jessica! I've fixed it now)!

#82 - The OC/Grey's Anatomy, set in my Ryan Sloan!Verse. There's some talk of physical abuse, and Ryan is injured because of it. Also, warning for Dawn Atwood. She doesn't appear but she exists, so there needs to be a warning... lol

Pick-A-Prompt #82 - Keep It Quiet

"Alex," Ryan called as he came into the ER and saw his friend. The two had bonded over backgrounds in foster care and unstable parents, and despite the fact that Alex could barely stand Mark most of the time, they had become good friends over the past few years, with most of the hospital family joking that they were mentally the same age so it made sense. And right now Alex was the person Ryan trusted not to tell anyone about why he needed a doctor.

"Hey, what's up?" Alex asked, walking over. "You're looking kinda pale..." he added, frowning.

"Can you take a look at my back?" Ryan asked. "And keep it quiet?"

"Sure," Alex agreed, gesturing for him to follow.

They found an empty exam room pretty quick, and Ryan stiffly took a seat on the bed, his back to the door and Alex. "I just need your word you won't tell anyone, no matter how much you need good gossip to top someone else."

"I promise," Alex agreed. "What's going on?"

Ryan slowly peeled off his shirt, revealing deep gouges on his shoulders and upper back, blood crusted onto them. "How bad are they?" Ryan asked quietly.

"What the hell?" Alex said, walking over. "If some hook up did..."

"No," Ryan said. "I... I'went to see my mom. And we got into a stupid argument, and... she has a type when it comes to boyfriends. They all like using the belt to punish her kids."

"Some asshole beat you with a belt?" Alex asked.

"Yeah," Ryan said quietly. "It had metal studs on it, and it shredded by shirt before I got away... I wasn't expecting it. it's been almost ten years since I got hit by one of her boyfriends, I... I wasn't expecting it."

"No one should ever expect it," Alex said. "Ry... these are pretty deep... I... I won't gossip about them, but... you're still a minor. I have to tell Mark, he's your dad, and he needs to know."

"Please don't... he won't let me see her..."

"You shouldn't see her if she lets this happen!" Alex replied. "Did she even try to stop him?"

Ryan shook his head, shoulder's shaking slightly. "She said she missed me, and she loves me, but she didn't even try..."

"Then you shouldn't see her," Alex said firmly. "Not alone anyway. And I''m sorry, but if keeping my promise and not telling anyone is gonna get you in trouble or danger? I'd rather you hate me. I'm gonna page Mark, and then I'll get you patched up, okay?"

Ryan nodded. "Okay."

Alex had gotten most of the blood cleaned off and was stitching the deepest of the cuts when Mark walked in and stopped short. "What... who did that?" he asked, anger radiating off of him.

"He said he went to see his mother," Alex said. "Her boyfriend started beating him with a studded belt."

"I know, but... she's my mom..." Ryan said, looking back over his shoulder. "She said she still loves me, and... I... I just wanted to see her. I wanted to know why she left me if she loved me so much, and... but when I asked, she got mad, said it was in the past, I should just forget about it, and I... I told her I couldn't because I spent so long all alone, scared, because she left me... and that's when he boyfriend came out with the belt... she didn't even try to stop him..."

"What's the address?" Mark asked.

"So I can send the cops after them."

"This in unacceptable, and I am not going to let it go. She stood there and let you get hurt!"

"Yelling isn't going to help," Alex commented. "I agree with you, hell, I'd be up for going over there after work and kicking their asses with you. But yelling at Ryan si not going to help anything."

Mark's shoulders slumped, knowing the other doctor was right. "Okay. But Ryan, you do not see her again, not without me right there with you. Understood?"

Ryan nodded. "I don't even wanna see her again. I'm sorry."

"You have nothing to be sorry for," Mark said. "When were you going to tell me about this?"

"I wasn't," Ryan admitted. "Alex promised not to tell anyone before I showed him, but then he said he couldn't keep quiet and had to tell you."

"These are going to need to be checked on to make sure they're healing without infection," Alex said. "Plus I did not wanna get any part of your very justified anger turned on me for hiding it," he added to Mark. "But I do still promise not to use it to top anyone else's gossip, no matter how tempting."

After getting patched up, Ryan headed home, and at the end of Mark's shift, Alex approached him. "I meant what I said. I'm up for going and kicking their asses if you want," he said.

Mark snorted. "They're not worth it. And it would probably upset Ryan, so... no. but thanks. Both for the offer and for taking care of him today."

"Well, somehow, despite who his parents are, he's a pretty great kid," Alex said.

"I make no claim of responsibility for that, no clue how it happened," Mark agreed.
